History of WORD.
WORD was started three years ago by a group of specialists in the field of gynecologic oncology with one dream: to save women’s lives through education and innovative clinical and scientific research. As the result of witnessing the daily struggles of women affected by gynecologic cancer, these doctors — skilled in research, surgery, chemotherapy and the management of cancer — desired to create a means to bring hope to these women and their families and to explore the possibility that some day the outlook for patients affected by gynecologic cancer could be improved.
WORD Today.
WORD is working to fulfill its bold mission. Since every woman is at risk for developing a gynecologic cancer, yet few are knowledgeable, WORD has applied for and received funding to develop an educational program through a cooperative agreement, awarded and administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research & Materiel Command (USAMRMC), and the Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC)*. WORD aims to provide efficacy-based education and outcomes-based research to educate women about gynecologic cancer. To that end, WORD plans to address educational topics such as the importance of regular Pap tests, educating young women about the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the strong association of endometrial cancer with obesity, awareness of genetic susceptibility to ovarian cancer, and when a woman should seek the care of a specialist. Utilizing the efficiencies of electronic media, this program will seek to generate involvement and relevancy to all women — including the underserved.
WORD continues to maintain its relationships with scientists who are working in the laboratory to develop a test for the early detection of ovarian cancer. WORD physicians aspire to build upon these relationships and to form strong links between practicing physicians and laboratory scientists.
