Uterine Cancer:
Uterine cancer is most prevalent in women who are going, or have gone, through menopause, the time in life when you stop having your menstrual period. The uterus, also know as the womb, is the area that a child is carried in during pregnancy. The most common kind of uterine cancer is endometrial cancer because it forms in the lining of the uterus, which is called the endometrium. The most common symptom of endometrial cancer is vaginal bleeding.
Uterine cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women today, but when found early, is very treatable. Report any unexplained vaginal bleeding to your gynecologist.
Risk factors for uterine cancer include:
• Age 50-plus
• Obesity
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Taking estrogen alone
• Taking tamoxifen
• Having a family history of uterine, ovarian or colon cancers.
Ways to reduce risk of uterine cancer:
• Consult your doctor about regular screenings if you feel you are at risk
• Stay physically active and maintain a healthy body weight
• Use birth control pills
