Open Letter to Friends of WORD!
June 23, 2008
Dear Friend,
In the State of Indiana, 63% of all those diagnosed with cancer will survive more than five years. However, the five-year rate for those with ovarian cancer, a gynecologic cancer, is only 41%. Ovarian cancer, one of the deadliest cancers, causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. With proper funding and an aggressive intervention strategy, many of these lives can and will be saved, literally saving thousands of women’s lives over the next five years. In one and half years, WORD has attempted to balance our part of the war against cancer between critical research and empowering education. We consistently help propel gynecologic cancer treatments, early diagnosis, and ultimately a cure with educating women with the signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers to advocate for themselves and protect their loved ones. We believe the life-granting education goal is simple . . . that in Indiana every female over the age of 13 be empowered with the proper and current education of cervical, ovarian, uterine, and other gynecologic cancers.
During the month of September, 2008 Ovar’Coming Together and Women’s Oncology Research & Development (WORD) are partnering together to turn Indianapolis into Teal Town! Teal is the recognized adovocacy and awareness color of ovarian cancer, and Ovar and WORD want all of Indianapolis to know! By branding the color teal during September and beyond Teal Town partners hope to create awareness of the signs, symptoms, and treatements of ovarian cancer.
Teal Town Partners are looking for sponsors of the September campaign. Our goals is 500,000 women will come into contact with life-saving information in the month of September, through teal awareness tree ribbons, yard signs, web sites, bill boards, and media information.
Please consider you and/or your organization becoming a campaign sponsor. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact us (Sue Ellen or Nathan) at the email or phone numbers below.
In the Battle,
Sue Ellen Moore Nathan Manahan
